INFECTIOUS DISEASES: TULAREMIA
Author: admin
An infectious disease caused by an organism called pasteurella tularensis, which is transmitted to men by handling infected rabbits or squirrels, or other small animals. The condition can also be transmitted by insect bites.
This condition gets its name from Tulare county, California, where wild game was found to be dying by the thousands from this condition. Since wild rabbits are the chief animals infected, the condition has been called rabbit fever. Men who hunt rabbits should be warned of the danger of bringing home any rabbit which can be knocked over with a stick. Healthy rabbits can run. People who handle rabbits for any purpose after they are dead ought to wear rubber gloves, and should wash their hands with antiseptic solutions. Never let a scratch, cut, or sore come in contact with the flesh of the rabbits or with a dish or pan in which rabbit meat has been kept. Wrapping paper which has contained the bodies of dead rabbits should be burned. A cut or a sore developing after handling rabbit meat must be suspected of this infection.
